CHAPTER NINETEEN

Dancing is good for her, his wife says. She’s been learning a lot, by which she means “relearning.” And it’s so interesting, the way the body—she moves in front of him—stored it all.

“And after almost forty years! Interesting, isn’t it? How it was able to remember, as if it has been lying dormant inside me the whole time and is now finally waking back up.”

“What?”

“Dancing!”

And all she has to do is surrender to it, her body, and how it feels, so that dancing can find its way back to the surface, which she finds very interesting. Dancing three times, interesting three times. He counted. And next? Of course, the instructor! Which makes him realize that she is always talking about the instructor, but without ever saying his name, and by doing so, she puts him on a kind of pedestal, ascribing to him an almost superhuman power. He is just incredible, she says. He pulls out everything that’s inside of her.

“And the way he does it! He’s so sensitive and precise when he gives instructions. A real artist,” she says, and after a pause, “It’s too bad for him. I mean, too bad that this was where he ended up. He should really be somewhere else completely.”

“And where would that be?”

That he considers this dancing business (in contrast to her “dancing,” he refers to it as “this dancing business”) belated, while at the same time, and this makes him even more against it, he knows she gave it up way back when. Of her own free will, of course—that is important to him, the fact that it was her own decision, shortly after they got married—he didn’t push her to do it, she just fell victim to circumstance: the long trip into the city, then pregnancy, then the house, which didn’t clean itself. A phrase that came from her and not from him, and which she applied in some form to everything imaginable: the meal, which wouldn’t cook itself. The children, who wouldn’t raise themselves.

And now she wants to start hopping around again? Or in her words, dancing? Now? While her body might remember, it’s also gotten a little wider around the hips, so much so that when she’s doing little demonstrations for him, he makes an effort not to look there but at her ankles, which have remained quite slender. Does she really want to know how he sees it? That her teacher is nothing to him? Just average and mediocre? And another note: he should consider
